Google announced last week that it is working with Home School Legal Defense Association to make its G Suite for Education software available to homeschool groups

In a blog post on its company website written by HSLDA Staff Attorney Darren Jones, Google revealed that in a few weeks it will begin accepting applications from homeschool co-ops to use its G Suite for Education.

The announcement represents a major change in policy. Previously Google allowed only accredited schools to use the software.

Jones contacted Google last summer after hearing from several homeschool co-op administrators who were hoping to gain access to G Suite.

“We worked for almost a year to come up with a way that Google could make its software available to co-ops while avoiding fraudulent claims,” said Jones. “They really wanted to do this.”

Details will be released soon explaining how homeschool co-ops can verify their status for Google.

Jones added that he appreciates Google’s responsiveness to homeschoolers.

“This is a good example of how companies can change with the times by recognizing that excellent education occurs in places other than traditional schools,” he said.

New geography book club for kids

There’s a new book club for kids grades 3-5.  It’s called Read Around
the World, and it will cover geography and world cultures via
literature and music.  Each month, the focus will be on a different
country.  This month, it’s the United States of America.  Over the
course of the year, the kids will be visiting Peru, China, Russia,
Kenya, and many other countries. Normally, the kids will have read a
book about the country, but there is no reading requirement for
this initial meeting.

The first session is tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 4:00.  We meet at
the Davie/Cooper City Library, located at 4600 SW 82 Avenue, Davie, FL
33328. It’s on the south side of Griffin Road, between Pine Island and
University Drive.  This session is on a Tuesday because of Veterans
Day, but it will normally be held on Mondays. The next session is
Monday, Dec. 3.

The book club will be led by Miss Linda Sindt, who developed a
geography curriculum for the Broward schools, and who many of
us remember from Young at Art.  She is an outstanding educator and
amazing with kids.

The club is not specifically for homeschoolers, but I know that several
homeschoolers will be there.

Of course, the book club is free.  It’s undertaken by One Beautiful
World in conjunction with the Davie/Cooper City Library.  OBW has
received a Target Early Literacy Grant for this program.

Spread the word, and I hope to see many of you there.

Best,
Jess Cabillot

It’s One Beautiful World!

Free, the coupon book that pays for itself

Our children are involved in the SAINTS physical education program.  It is a homeschool physical education program that never turns away a child from the program due to financial reasons.  They have fundraisers for their scholarship program.  The “Enjoy the City” coupon books is one such fundraiser.

The “Enjoy the City” coupon books are $20 and are full of many great coupons such as Winn Dixie, Cold Stone Creamery, Firehouse Subs, Pizza Loft, Panda Express, Wendy’s, Sports Authority, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Jamba Juice, Vocelli Pizza, Checkers, Dairy Queen, GFS, local golf courses, Kabooms, and many others.  The great thing is they are basically free!  In the book you receive four $5 coupons for use at Winn Dixie, and the book costs $20.  So, the books pays for itself!  You can use the Winn Dixie coupons at Publix if you choose to as well. Publix accepts Winn Dixie coupons.

Please let me know if you would like to purchase one of these books.  I can accept cash or checks (made out to me or CHAA).

(CHAA stands for Christian Homeschool Athletic Association)

Email or call me to place your order, and I will meet with you to collect the money and give you the book.  These coupons don’t expire until DECEMBER 2013!

Thanks for helping the kids,

The Broward Homeschool PSG is going to Legoland on Sept 20th, 2012

Ole Kirk Christiansen started making wooden toys in his small workshop in Billund, Denmark in 1932. Two years later, Ole Kirk decided upon a name for his toys and his workshop – LEGO®, a contraction of the Danish words ‘leg godt,’ meaning ‘play well.’ Coincidentally, it was later learned that LEGO in Latin means “I put together” or “I assemble.”

In 1947, the company bought its first plastics injection-molding machine and in 1949 the forerunner to the LEGO brick was introduced, under the name “Automatic Binding Bricks”.

Inner tubes on the bricks were introduced in 1958, which significantly increased the number of possible building combinations. In 1967, the larger DUPLO® bricks for pre-school children were introduced, and LEGO TECHNIC for older children debuted in 1977. LEGO DACTA®, now know as The Educational Division, was set up in 1980.

It was the increasing interest in the fantastic LEGO masterpieces displayed at the factories that triggered Godtfred Kirk Christiansen’s idea of exhibiting the models outside. He originally envisioned just a little garden, where various LEGO models and figures could be displayed, but when work began on the project, it developed and became much larger.

In June 1968, LEGOLAND® Billund opened for the first time on a 9 acre site. All buildings, landscapes and vehicles were built using standard LEGO bricks, and the park’s success exceeded everyone’s expectations – in the first year alone, 625,000 happy visitors were guests at the park!

LEGOLAND Florida is geared specifically towards youngsters ages two through 12. With over 50 family rides, “hands-on” attractions and shows, LEGOLAND Florida provides education, adventure and fun in this second park of its kind in the United States.

In addition to LEGOLAND Florida (opening Fall 2011), there are currently 4 LEGOLAND parks in the world – LEGOLAND Billund in Denmark marked its 40th anniversary in 2008; LEGOLAND Windsor outside of London opened in 1996, and has been awarded the British Government’s top honor for excellence in academic programs, LEGOLAND California opened March 20, 1999  and LEGOLAND Deutschland in Germany opened the Spring of 2002.

Directions
LEGOLAND Florida is located at One LEGOLAND Way, Winter Haven Florida 33884, just 45 minutes from the Orlando theme parks or downtown Tampa.

From Orlando, take I-4 WEST to exit 55 (US Hwy 27 South). Turn right off U.S. Highway 27 at State Road 540/Cypress Gardens Boulevard. Park is four miles on the left.

From Tampa take I-4 EAST to Exit 27 (Polk County Parkway). Then take Exit 14 to Winter Haven (2nd Toll Booth) by turning east on S.R. 540  and follow eight miles to Hwy 17 North. Turn left to take Hwy 17 North two miles over the bridge to Cypress Gardens Boulevard and turn right. Legoland Way will be on your right.

If using a GPS system, keep in mind that LEGOLAND Florida may not yet be included as a destination. A secondary address for GPS systems is 6000 Cypress Gardens Boulevard, Winter Haven FL 33884.
